I am a single female that drives an older Mercedes with many miles on it. Due to the age of the car,it is not unusual for repairs to be needed from time to time. With my wonderful dad also being a Mercedes owner for over 40 plus years, the majority of the repairs were often executed by him. Unfortunately,we lost him recently and among a million other reasons,I feared where I would take my car in for repairs.Ifound a place in Plano that quoted me over $4000to repair/ replace a head light, a tail light and a water pump. This sounded alarmingly high so I reached out to a friend. He recommend I call this wonderful place. I spoke with Moe and immediately I felt at ease. He listened to my concerns and asked me to bring the car in.Long story short,I picked up my car the next MORNING. Moe and his amazing team not only repaired said issues BUT he also checked my tire pressure,my oil ,made note that I had an issue with the hood AND charged me $1137( versus over $4000 at prior garage/ auto shop)During multiple conversations with him,it became very clear that he not only possesses an amazing work ethic but that integrity is extremely important to him.( he even offered to let me drive a loaner car to work the next day if my car couldn't be repaired in time for me to go to work) WHO DOES that these days? Finding him and this business was literally an answered prayer. If you have any fears about the honor or lack thereof, of folks that work in this industry... they are spot on. Yet because of Moe I can also testify that there are still good, decent people that are willing to help AND not greatly overcharge you. He is one in a million and I feel totally comfortable singing his praises . Don't hesitate to give this wonderful place your business. You will not be disappointed. If I could give 10 stars, I would have done so!!

Pretty sure these guys have their friends and family do reviews lol. Came in for a Groupon offer to replace the brake pads. Of course then they say my rotors need to be replaced and they can’t do the pads bc of this. So I went 10 minutes down the road to Kwik Kar and they explained to me that while the rotors had some minor scoring and that it may cause the brake pads to wear down quicker, there was no NEED to replace them right now. It’s one thing if you’re honest and tell me something SHOULD be done Vs trying to back me in a corner and refuse to do the cheaper service so I’ll pay more money for more services. I obviously won’t be back.

  • Quality Valvoline motor oil
  • New oil filter
  • Lubrication of chassis components according to your vehicle manufacturer’s specs
  • Ability to stay in your car, if desired, while the service is performed
DOES OIL DO FOR YOUR VEHICLE?
Valvoline motor oil lubricates engine components and helps stop metal parts from grinding against one another. It also helps stop deposits from forming on engine components by holding contaminants in suspension.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
Over time, oil gets dirty. When dirt accumulates in oil, it can become more viscous and abrasive, less effective in lubricating and cause more wear to your engine.
BENEFITS
How Regular Oil Changes Help Your Vehicle
  • Helps fight the four major causes of engine breakdown: Heat, Deposits, Sludge, Friction
  • Provides engine protection at startup
  • Helps to maximize engine performance
MILEAGE INTERVAL
Your owner’s manual may provide different oil change intervals for both regular driving and severe driving. Roughly 70% of drivers fall under severe driving conditions. Severe driving conditions include stop-and-go driving, consistent idling, pulling, towing, dusty environment or high or low ambient temperatures*. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for your manufacturer’s oil change mileage interval recommendation. *Based on Valvoline market research conducted in 2014
CHOOSING THE RIGHT OIL CHANGE PRODUCTS
It’s important to choose the right oil for your vehicle. Valvoline offers Conventional, Synthetic Blend and Full Synthetic motor oils in many viscosity grades to meet your manufacturer recommendations.
KEEP YOUR ENGINE WORKING EFFICIENTLY
Vehicle engines require a specific air-to-fuel ratio to operate properly. Over time, air filters can get clogged with dirt and debris, leading to restricted airflow into the engine. With reduced air flow, an engine can be stressed and lose performance.

MILEAGE INTERVAL FOR TIRE ROTATION SERVICE

Most auto manufacturers recommend rotating your tires at regularly scheduled intervals. Please consult your owner’s manual for specific manufacturer recommendations.

Your tires are a critical link between your vehicle and the road. The tire’s tread helps give you traction and control that is necessary for driving safety. As your tires age and the tread wears away with usage, they become less effective and eventually must be replaced. A tire inspection can determine when replacement is necessary.

This location performs emissions testing.

Car AC systems have components that require love and attention to avoid drying out and cracking. The car heater also needs regular check-ups to make sure there are no leaky valves or blockages. Let your neighborhood Midas service your A/C or heater to keep you comfortable at any temperature.

You may think your car’s exhaust system is designed only to reduce noise, but it is also responsible for reducing harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere. Properly functioning mufflers and exhaust systems not only sound better, they are better – for you, your car, and the environment.

Sooner or later your car’s engine accessory drive belts, timing belts, and coolant hoses will dry out and crack. Regular inspections, coupled with timely automotive belt and hose replacement will help protect against roadside breakdowns and expensive repairs.

BRAKE PADS

PUMP THE BRAKES.

Making sure your brake pads are working properly is essential to safely and effectively travel in your vehicle. This is why knowing when to replace brake pads is an important question and we’re happy to assist.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAKE PADS & BRAKE ROTORS?

Brake pads and brake rotors are parts of any disc braking system typical of most vehicles on the road today. When you press your brake pedal, the brake pads clamp down against the rotors to slow or stop your vehicle. So, they’re kind of a big deal.

While brake pads of course wear down naturally over time, paying attention to the wear patterns can help prevent more costly repairs down the road. By the time you hear squealing (and especially grinding), your pads have likely worn down to the point where they’re impacting the brake rotors. So, in order to avoid brake rotor repairs, you’ll want to make sure you’re regularly having your brakes inspected.

HOW LONG DO BRAKE PADS LAST?

You can generally expect brake pads to last between 30,000-35,000 miles. However, that number will vary from vehicle to vehicle and from driver to driver. If you’ve got a lead foot, you might need new pads sooner! Also, drivers dealing with heavy traffic who use their brakes more often than those in more rural areas can expect to get less mileage life out of their brake pads.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR BRAKE PADS?

When brake pads need to be replaced, you may notice your car shaking or pulsing when you press on the brakes. That might sound fun, but we can promise you, it’s not! The pulsing and shaking while braking could also be caused by a warped rotor, so it’s best to get all of that checked out during any brake job.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS YOU NEED BRAKE PADS REPLACED
  • Squealing or screeching noises (we all know this unpleasant sound)

  • Thin or worn brake pads (look through your wheel spokes and locate the pad against your rotor – if it’s less than 1/4 inch thick, it might be time to change)

  • Grinding and growling (this is a definite past-due sign)

Just look – and listen – for the signs and symptoms of worn brakes, or stop by your nearest location and have our experts check ‘em out (for free). If you know you need brake service, be sure to check our brakes coupons to save on your repairs!

BRAKE ROTORS

STOP, COLLABORATE & LISTEN.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE WORN BRAKE ROTORS?

When your brake rotors are working properly, they spin on the hub of the wheels as they turn, which provides a smooth surface for your brake pads to grab when braking.

If not replaced in a timely manner, brake rotors can warp and become worn down, causing damage down the road and making your braking system less effective. And we figure you already know why it’s important to be able to press the brakes and have your car… STOP!

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR ROTORS NEED TO BE REPLACED?
  • Brake noise – A squeaking or squealing sound while braking can indicate warped or worn rotors. Warped rotors tend to squeak while severely worn rotors will produce a grinding sound. Consult your local Brakes Plus to diagnose whether these sounds are originating from your rotors, pads, or both.

  • Bad vibes – If you feel vibration in your brake pedal or steering wheel when braking, this could be a clue that your rotors are no longer providing a smooth surface for your brake pads to make contact with.

  • Visual indicators – Some cars may require you to remove the wheel to see the rotor (we can help!), while others with open spokes allow you to peek at the rotor without removing the wheel. Grooves, imperfections, or a bluish color (caused by heat damage) are hints of worn rotors.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR ROTORS?

As with many questions – it depends! Brake rotors can wear out after as little as 30,000 miles, or can last up to 70,000 miles.

Your driving habits and environment affect the life of both your brake pads and rotors. Stop-and-go city traffic causes more than headaches – it wears on your brakes as well. Your vehicle’s weight and the quality of the parts used in your braking system also play a part in the longevity of your rotors.

Our brake experts can inspect your rotors (for FREE), and let you know whether it’s time to have them replaced. When the time comes, we’ll use only quality parts to ensure you have a safe and smooth experience on the road.

Simply choose a time convenient for you and we’ll be ready… though if you have worn rotors, we might hear you coming anyway!

WHEN UNDER PRESSURE, WE’LL COME THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH!

The clutch is the mechanism allowing your wheels to disengage from the engine, so they can stop spinning even while your engine continues to run. Without a clutch, your wheels and engine would be stuck spinning at the same rate. We imagine we don’t need to explain why it’s important to stop at a red light without your whole engine going kaput!

IS CLUTCH DIFFERENT THAN TRANSMISSION?

Your vehicle’s clutch and transmission are not the same thing, but they do work together. The clutch transfers power from your engine to your transmission and is located between those two components (engine and transmission). The transmission then takes that power and passes it on to the wheels, which if properly aligned, gets you rolling down the road.

In order for the transmission to switch gears, the clutch has to release from the transmission momentarily – something those of you with manual transmissions are familiar with!

HOW OFTEN DOES YOUR CLUTCH NEED TO BE REPLACED?

A clutch generally lasts between 60,000-100,000 miles, though its lifespan is highly dependent on the level of use, wear and tear. No clutch will last forever, but there are a few different scenarios that can cause the facings on your clutch to wear more quickly.

Stop-and-go city traffic is harder on your clutch than the open highway, so if you’re a city guy or gal, it’s more likely your clutch will wear out faster. For those out-of-towners, off-roaders, pulling a trailer, and frequent gear shifters, these driving habits can also accelerate clutch wear and tear.

SIGNS YOU NEED A CLUTCH REPLACEMENT
  • Slipping gears, causing temporary loss of acceleration

  • Burning smell when accelerating from a stop

  • Grinding sound while shifting between gears

  • Clutch pedal stays near the floor, or feels soft when pressed (for manual transmission vehicles)

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN A CLUTCH SERVICE?
  • Replacement of the pressure plate, clutch disk, and throwout bearing

  • Resurfacing or replacement of the flywheel

  • Replacement of any worn out hydraulic parts

You can trust the experts at all of our nearby Brakes Plus locations with your clutch repair and replacement needs. We’re here to help get you back on the road quickly and safely, but before you stop by, don’t forget to check our clutch offers (see what we did there) and save on your next service!

CAR JOKE OF THE DAY: BEING A MUFFLER IS EXHAUSTING WORK.

Mufflers are the quiet type (at least when working as intended), but we’re going to brag on them for a minute! Not only do they keep your vehicle noise down – which keeps your neighbors happy – they also cut down on pollution released by your car. Mufflers are just one part of the all-important exhaust system on your vehicle.

WHAT DOES THE EXHAUST SYSTEM DO?

The exhaust system is an often-overlooked, yet crucial, system that protects both you and the environment. Harmful fumes are generated as your engine runs, and the exhaust system routes these fumes away from the engine and passenger cabin. It performs this function while also boosting your vehicle’s performance and reducing noise.

A leak in the exhaust system causes your engine to work harder than it should, reducing fuel efficiency. In addition, it puts you at risk of inhaling hazardous fumes and also releases them into the environment – scenarios to avoid whenever possible. And, guess what? It’s possible!

SYMPTOMS OF EXHAUST & MUFFLER ISSUES
  • Louder-than-normal engine noise – A rusted muffler, cracks in the pipe, or leaks in the exhaust system are a likely cause for these harsh sounds.

  • (Not) good vibrations – An exhaust leak could be to blame for vibration in your steering wheel, gas pedal, or even throughout your entire vehicle.

  • Decreased gas mileage – Your engine has to burn more fuel as it works harder to make up for a failing exhaust system.

  • Whining or rattling – Listen for whining noises from the engine, or rattling sounds from beneath your car, even (especially) when you’re idling.

  • Unpleasant smell – If an exhaust leak is allowing excessive fumes into the air, and especially if these fumes are inside your passenger cabin, you should immediately bring your vehicle to your nearest auto shop.

BRAKES PLUS HAS YOU COVERED FOR EXHAUST SYSTEM REPAIRS

Your exhaust system does its important job while hanging from the underside of your vehicle. Due to it’s location, it can be exposed to road debris, bumpy rides, and of course the normal wear-and-tear all parts experience with age.

We recommend having this system inspected at least once a year to keep your vehicle running as efficiently, safely, and quietly as possible. Simply book your service appointment online for a day and time that works best for you, or just stop by your nearest location for an exhaust system inspection or repair!

YOU’RE HOT, THEN YOU’RE COLD

Your ride is smokin’ hot… and we mean that in the most literal sense. Your engine operates between about 200-230 degrees Fahrenheit, and if the temperature creeps higher than that range, you’re likely looking at overheating issues that could cause significant engine damage. To prevent this from happening, your car is equipped with a radiator as the primary component in expelling heat from your engine.

HOW DO RADIATORS & WATER PUMPS WORK?

As engine coolant circulates throughout the engine, it collects heat, and your vehicle needs a way to dissipate this heat. The radiator uses fans and sheer surface area to cool this fluid, then send it back out to do its job all over again. The water pump provides the ‘oomph’, ensuring the coolant continues circulating throughout the entire system over and over again.

If your water pump or radiator are compromised, well, let’s just say things can get a little heated. Without a water pump, the engine coolant sits still, collecting heat without being able to exchange it inside the radiator. Likewise, a faulty radiator means the coolant can’t properly cool before traveling back to the engine.

SIGNS YOU NEED RADIATOR SERVICE
  • Engine overheating – An engine that can’t cool down may have an array of causes within the cooling system to blame, including the radiator.

  • Temperature gauge reading hot – Similarly to overheating engine issues, if your engine is consistently working under high heat, your radiator may need repairs.

  • Leaking engine coolant – If you notice coolant (usually green or orange) leaking from your vehicle, you’ll need to find out whether it’s leaking from your radiator or another part of the cooling system.

  • Rusted radiator – If you know where to locate your radiator (generally close behind the grill), inspect it for rust spots which could indicate leaking fluids.

WHAT DOES A RADIATOR FLUSH SERVICE INCLUDE?

We provide a water pump and radiator flush service to pinpoint issues with your car’s cooling system and keep it working properly. Here’s what’s we’ll do:

  • Pressurize cooling system to detect leaks

  • Perform engine block test

  • Inspect all radiator hoses

  • Check water pump and belts

  • Visually inspect any other parts for coolant leaks

  • Check thermostat and cooling fan

BENEFITS OF A RADIATOR FLUSH
  • Improved engine performance and longer lifespan

  • Removal of rust and deposits from your radiator

  • Lubrication provided to the water pump

  • Elimination of contaminants from old engine coolant

  • Full inspection to ensure overall healthy cooling system

Our expert teams at your local Brakes Plus know how to keep things cool. And you know what would make your visit even cooler – saving on your radiator service on your next visit!

BUCKLE UP: A LESSON ON SERPENTINE BELTS

The serpentine belt (or drive belt) provides power to various components in your vehicle. Which crucial components? I’m glad you asked! These can include the power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning system, and – in some vehicles – the water pump, which are all put into motion by the serpentine belt. That’s why it’s important to keep that serpent slithering smoothly!

HOW OFTEN DOES YOUR SERPENTINE BELT NEED TO BE REPLACED?

Modern serpentine belts should last between 60,000-100,000 miles. Heat and friction wear the belt down over time, causing it to fray, crack, and slip on the pulleys it’s wrapped around – all normal wear and tear. However, improper tension on the belt can also cause it to wear more quickly and create other issues as it begins to slip.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A BAD SERPENTINE BELT?
  • Squealing noise – Squealing under the hood could mean the serpentine belt is slipping or already damaged. Sometimes this only requires an adjustment to the tension on your belt, while other times it may require a belt replacement.

  • Overheating engine – If the serpentine belt isn’t providing the water pump with power, the pump can’t cool your engine. This is a serious issue that can snowball into many other problems. (that’s a hot snowball!)

  • Power steering loss – Since the serpentine belt helps the power steering system function, you may find yourself with trouble turning the wheel as a result of a faulty serpentine belt.

  • Air conditioning problems – If your A/C isn’t blowing cold air, this could point back to the serpentine belt failing to provide enough power the air conditioning system.

  • Loss of battery power – The alternator depends on the serpentine belt for power, so if it’s not functioning properly, your battery is also unable to recharge.

  • Visible wear on serpentine belt – Cracks, worn ribs, separation, missing chunks, fraying, and other obvious damage to the belt is a clear indication of a needed belt replacement.

We’re of course happy to take a look between those services as well – just stop by, or schedule an appointment for a day and time convenient for you!

SHOCKS & STRUTS. STRUTS & SHOCKS. WOW…SAY THAT FIVE TIMES FAST!

Kind of makes that girl that ‘sells seashells on the seashore’ seem pretty silly, huh? Well, shocks and struts are pretty serious, and often overlooked when it comes to vehicle maintenance.

When it comes to keeping your vehicle on the road (literally), shocks and struts are crucial. Shocks and struts control the bounce of your wheels (and you!) on uneven terrain, and also limit your car’s side-to-side sway.

As part of the suspension system, weak shocks or struts can cause an uncomfortable ride and poor handling. Generally, your car will have shocks or struts, one or the other – not both. They perform essentially the same function, but using different methods.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHOCKS & STRUTS?

Simply put, a strut provides structural support within the suspension system, helping to hold the weight of your vehicle, while a shock does not. Struts hold the tires in alignment – which is why it’s important to have your alignment checked anytime you service your struts – while the shock stands alone as simply a shock absorber.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GET SHOCKS & STRUTS CHECKED OUT?

Typically, shocks and struts should be replaced every 50,000 miles, but their lifespan can often vary based on driving conditions and the quality of parts. Watch for these common signs and symptoms to know if your shocks or struts are in need of service:

  • You feel excessive bounce in your ride

  • Your car lurches or the front dips when you brake

  • You notice abnormal or premature tire wear

  • Your car sways to one side when turning

  • Your steering wheel feels difficult to turn (this can also be a symptom of a steering problem)

BENEFITS OF REPLACING SHOCKS & STRUTS

After replacing worn shocks or struts, you’ll notice many benefits such as:

  • A smoother ride, especially on bumpy roads

  • Improved braking ability

  • Slower wear on your tires and suspension system

  • Better steering control

If you suspect it’s time to replace your shocks or struts, or just want to make sure they’re in optimal condition, our experts at your local Brakes Plus will inspect your suspension system, diagnose any issues and perform the necessary repairs! We offer top-quality shocks and struts at an affordable price, and we have shock and strut coupons to boot!

NOTHING SUSPENSEFUL ABOUT IT. THAT’S A SMOOTH OPERATOR.

Your car’s suspension system keeps you riding smoothly over bumps, dips, and turns, while also ensuring you maintain control of the vehicle through all of these obstacles. Our experts can fix steering and suspension system issues that involve shock and strut repair, as well as front and rear suspension services.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN STEERING & SUSPENSION SERVICE?

When you bring your vehicle to Brakes Plus with steering or suspension issues, our technicians will start with a free alignment check, which allows them to inspect all parts related to your steering and suspension. If anything is found to be damaged or worn out, we’ll provide you with an estimate before performing any work.

If any major components of your suspension need to be replaced, or if you notice irregular wear patterns on your tires, it’s important to have your car aligned at the same time. This relatively inexpensive procedure could end up saving you a great deal in terms of longer tire life, better fuel economy, and safer handling.

SYMPTOMS OF STEERING ISSUES
  • Abnormal noise – If you hear noise when turning the wheel or going over bumps, it may indicate a problem with your steering system.

  • Poor steering control – When your vehicle becomes difficult to steer, steering wheel shakes, or the steering wheel is off-center, these are definite signs your steering system needs inspecting.

SYMPTOMS OF SUSPENSION ISSUES
  • Excessive bouncing – If your vehicle bounces more than usual after driving over potholes, or speed bumps, you should have your suspension checked out.

  • Loss of control during sudden stops – Vehicles with poor suspension will often skid, swerve, or veer out of control when braking suddenly.

  • Uneven tire wear – If your tires are wearing unevenly, despite regular tire rotations, it may be an indicator of your suspension failing to hold your car evenly.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROPER VEHICLE SUSPENSION?
  • Improved overall vehicle performance

  • Consistent handling and braking

  • Increased ability for tires to stay in contact with the road

  • Decreased rate of tire wear

If you’re noticing signs of steering or suspension problems, schedule an appointment and we’ll take a look for you. Make sure to check our latest offers and save on steering and suspension service before your visit!
